Ontario, dear Ontario, where are we heading? (Part 2)

Continuing with our strategy to turn this Province around to avoid the iceberg that our economy is heading for.

Once we stop digging our financial hole we focus on job creation. In order to accomplish this we must first recognize what the Liberals don’t. Governments do not, and should not, create jobs. Obviously there is an appropriate number of civil servants that are required to run the Province, but economic growth does not come from the government hiring thousands of additional bureaucrats. Other than having a small group of talented civil servants the government must provide the environment for job creation in the private sector and then get out of the way. Monitor the situation and severely punish those who want to abuse the system but otherwise make yourself invisible. [Read more...]

Ontario, dear Ontario, where are we heading? (Part 1)

Is anyone really surprised with the Drummond Report? We here at The Parkdale Party certainly are not. Mr. McGuinty’s transformation of our economy from one of manufacturing to one of services is just about complete. Criticising with 20/20 hindsight is easy but the damage to our economy has been done and the folly of the Liberal Party’s policies have been painfully exposed. So, where do we go from here? As tough to digest as The Drummond Report is it is our opinion that, aside from the obvious cuts in spending that have been identified, there really is no job creation plan. So let’s move forward. What would The Parkdale Party do to create jobs? [Read more...]

The Dark Side of Capitalism

Chinese Factory WorkersInsatiable demand for iPhones has helped Apple achieve first quarter profits of $13B, more than double that for the same period in the previous year. It’s been a bonanza for  Apple shareholders. Not so much for the Chinese workers assembling the iPhones.

In a piece written for the New York Times, Charles Duhigg and David Barboza describe an accident at a factory where employees polished thousands of iPad cases a day. “Two people were killed immediately, and over a dozen others hurt. As the injured were rushed into ambulances, one in particular stood out. His features had been smeared by the blast, scrubbed by heat and violence until a mat of red and black had replaced his mouth and nose.”

Chinese employees “work excessive overtime, in some cases seven days a week, and live in crowded dorms. Some say they stand so long that their legs swell until they can hardly walk. Under-age workers have helped build Apple’s products, and the company’s suppliers have improperly disposed of hazardous waste and falsified records, according to company reports and advocacy groups that, within China, are often considered reliable, independent monitors.” [Read more...]

McGuinty: Liar or simply Incompetent?

Ah, the question that has been swirling in my mind. Is he a malicious liar who will say and do anything to stay in power or is he so incompetent that he really doesn’t understand what he is doing to our once great province? [Read more...]

As an Ontario taxpayer are you insane?

As a New Year’s resolution why don’t we all vow to bring a little more sanity to our lives. To some degree each one of us has the ability and power to do just that.  [Read more...]

When is a tuition cut not a tuition cut?

Premier dad recently announced the cuts to tuition fees that the Liberals promised during the recent election campaign. Excellent for all of us with children going into college or university, right? But remember that this was a campaign promise, the type that the Liberals have had a hard time keeping. Now we see the fine print. [Read more...]

Occupy – Next?

What started out as a wonderful movement to highlight the growing gap between the rich 1% and the rest of us has hit the inevitable wall. The first big step was taken to bring the discussion to the forefront, which it did in a huge way, but where do we go from here?

Occupy Movement Loses Its Body And Finds Its Voice

Occupy Portest Gains Mainstream SupportAs winter sets in, the physical presence of the Occupy movement seems to be coming to an end. Occupy news is filled with stories of evictions, as the patience of municipalities has come to an end. Fire, health, and safety regulations are all being cited as credible rationale to evict what, after all, are illegal squatters.

In some cases such as Occupy Wall Street, the city has been circumspect, clearing Zucotti Park and then allowing protesters to return, albeit without tents or the right to camp. In others like Occupy Oakland, the municipal authorities have decided to forcefully evict the Occupiers, media image be damned. [Read more...]

The Lost Boys

The Lost BoysThis isn’t about the movie, although I loved it when it came out and they were way ahead of the curve on the whole vampire thing. It’s about our boys.

Respected PhD Leonard Sax has attracted a lot of attention with the publication of his book Boys Adrift . In it, Sax seeks to address the causes behind a generation of young males that are unmotivated and have no ambition. Think Failure To Launch. It was a funny concept as a movie, but it’s a real problem. [Read more...]

Line Item Fatigue

Line Item FatigueYesterday I got an oil change at a quick lube place and noticed a $1.99 line item for “shop charges”. I asked what this was for and was told that “it’s for the rags we use”.

Last week I paid the cottage hydro bill which was packed full of line items, presumably to justify the $326.99 needed to deliver $104 of electricity. Since we won’t return to the cottage until next spring I put the phone there on suspension and noticed a $50 line item on my next phone bill for this service. [Read more...]
