Once again the Ontario Tories have demonstrated that they just don’t understand how to deal with our unionized labour force. By waging a war on unions the Tories think that they will get the public support they need to finally defeat the Liberal juggernaut. This strategy is basically replacing the Liberals idiotic job creation strategy with an equally idiotic Conservative one. Clearly the Tories have no ideas regarding what it will take to get this Province back to work and have again shot themselves in the proverbial foot with their white paper “Paths To Prosperity – Flexible Labour Markets”.
Attack unions? This is like a slugger in baseball going for the fences only to hit a soft grounder out to first. This is what the Tories have just accomplished.
Why does it always seem to be unions vs government or unions vs business? Ontario will continue to slide into the abyss with this type of “us against them” mentality. What Ontario desperately needs is for some big boys and girls to sit down together and discuss the problems openly and honestly, like adults. Unfortunately words like “together”, “openly”, “honestly”, and “adults” can rarely be used to describe the relationships between Ontario unions and employers.
This is the core problem!
It is not the unions that are the problems, it’s the people. The people on both sides of the negotiating tables.
The Tories have no chance of getting anywhere with this insane plan and the Liberals have alienated the people who got them elected. The NDP mean well but their ideologies just don’t suit today’s business world because you can’t force businesses, through increased taxation, to create jobs.
What we need is strong, intelligent, leadership on both sides of the negotiating table. Clearly we don’t have such leadership at this critical point in our history.
Ontario’s future is not getting any brighter as far as jobs for us, our kids, and our grandkids. The three big children in Ontario’s political playground are all just making a mess and kicking sand in our collective faces. It’s time for the adults to step in clean this mess up once and for all. Discuss and negotiate openly in public and the problems and obstacles to success will be apparent right away.
This is what The Parkdale Party would do.
